I met Calvin on the track behind Eisenhower Middle School. It was 7th grade. 1977. I was new to the school and Calvin was the fastest kid at Eisenhower. I raced him. He won. It wouldn't be the last time we competed. And it wasn't the last time he won. Calvin touched my life at a critical time. For me, Calvin Alexander embodied excellence. He was the best; and he drove me to be better. While we were on different sidelines playing football at Northside, and we had a couple of great games, I'm proud to have been his teammate on the track team. I will alway cherish the honor I had of handing him the baton on our relay because it gave me a front row seat to watching him run. While life took me away from Oklahoma, I have always fondly remembered Calvin and his smile and regret never being able to share my appreciation with him. Later in his life, Calvin returned to his beginnings to mentor middle school students. I thank God for the blessing of knowing such a wonderful young man..
