Born on January 14, 1957 in Flint, Michigan, Sheryl was the eldest child born to Dr. Bertram Sears Sr. and Frances Wilson Sears. Upon graduating from Bishop McGuiness High School she went on to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at Howard University in Washington, D.C., graduating in 1979. She continued her studies at Howard University School of Law, earning her Juris Doctorate in 1982.
Sheryl dedicated over two decades to the field of law, serving as an administrative judge for the D.C. Office of Employee Appeals. An expert in conflict resolution, she also served as a mediator from 1994 onward, using her calm demeanor to help individuals and communities find common ground.
Her life extended far beyond her legal career. Most notably, Sheryl trained with a voice coach. She shared her passion of jazz, blues, and bossa nova songs with audiences across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
Sheryl also gave her time generously. She volunteered as a tutor with the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church Community Club for many years. She also mentored a young woman in foster care, offering guidance and encouragement as she transitioned to independent living.
Sheryl was a dedicated friend maintaining close relationships with friends of all ages. She offered love and support and a lending ear to those she cared for. Cherishing her role as the glue within her family, she traveled frequently to maintain close ties and strengthen bonds that meant so much to her.
Sheryl was a loyal daughter, a loving sister, a devoted aunt, and a treasured friend. She is survived by her sister, Kay Sears Hairston; her sister-in-law, Jackie Sears; nephews Bertram Sears III (Trent), Christopher Hairston, and Stephen Hairston; and her niece, Jasmine Sears. She also leaves behind a host of beloved cousins, extended family members, and friends whose lives were enriched by her presence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Bertram E. Sears Sr. and Frances Wilson Sears, and her brother, Bertram E. Sears Jr.
Sheryl’s legacy is one of brilliance, generosity, elegance, and love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
