I extend my deepest condolences to Dr. Portis wife, parents and brother Julian. I met Dr. Portis in New Orleans after a Bayou Classic game. His brother, introduced Dr. Portis to my daughter Brittney and me. He was very intelligent courteous and easy to engage in conversation. I told him jokingly that my husband was in the midst although he was deceased his OMega Psi Phi spirit was in the conversation. I pray for the entire family's strength to endure and accept God's will. He was a Christianity and is resting in Gid's kingdom. Julian, be strong, hold on to God's Word and trust God to bring you brighter days ahead. You all loved Dr.Portis but God loved him more and quietly called his child home.. ?Yvonne Mills

I am truly shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden death of Dr. Portis. My heart aches for his wife, his family, and especially his sweet daughter, ShaMarie. I have worked at Metro Tech for the past three years and I can honestly say that out of all the people in leadership there, Dr. Portis was the most genuine and caring of them all. He didn't just focus on superficial things like organizational goals or getting awards. Instead, he made sure to build real relationships with people - both staff and students alike. He understood that people are an organization's greatest asset and without them there would be no Metro Tech. As Associate Superintendent, Dr. Portis had many responsibilities, but his untimely death left him with no time to get it all done. Yet, no matter how little time he had left on this earth, he always made time to listen and make his staff feel valued. I remember when I was going through a very difficult time at work and I called Dr. Portis for help. He spent nearly an hour on the phone with me listening to my concerns and offering words of encouragement. That meant so much to me and I will forever be grateful for his generosity. Metro Tech has been dealt a huge blow by the passing of Dr. Portis and his absence will be felt by every one of us for years to come. In his position as a leader, Dr. Portis desired to not only make a mark, but leave a legacy. I have no doubt it is one that will continue to grow and become a part of Metro Tech history. He was someone who was respected and admired and will always be remembered for his charm, his positive attitude, his great sense of style, and his smile that lit up a room. I miss you already, Dr. Portis. With love and remembrance, Joyce Hishaw-Willis

Praying for renewed hope. Everyone who knew him came to love him. The community will also miss his smile and his presence. Please know that the Bible says at Rev 21:3,4 that “God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”, so despite the sadness you are feeling now, in time it will soften. We also have the hope of seeing our loves ones again because the Bible says at Acts 24:15 “There is going to be a resurrection,” also “Do not be amazed at this,” Jesus assures us, “for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” (John 5:28, 29) Please know that God misses him too, and he will help you deal with your pain, "Throw your burden on Jehovah, And he will sustain you. Never will he allow the righteous one to fall", Psalms 55:22, I love you all.

My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. May you and your family find comfort and peace in God's word the Bible with the promise that God has said he's going to do for mankind.
